750ml: $68.00
Magnum: $155.00
The Vineyard
The 6-acre Rice-Spivak Vineyard is near the town of Sebastopol, California, north of San Francisco, and several miles from the Sonoma County coast of the Pacific Ocean. It is planted to a combination of Dijon and Swan pinot noir varieties. These distinctive clones are planted in an unusual mix of sandy loam and volcanic ash that in 2007 again yielded a characteristically complex and aromatic wine. 360 cases made.
Tasting Notes
Steve Tanzer’s “International Wine Cellar” notes, 5/09: Deep ruby. Brooding dark berry and cherry-cola aromas are complemented by bright mineral and floral notes. Slow to open, offering bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors and a late note of licorice. The finish repeats the cola and licorice notes and clings nicely. This is the most backward of this set, and in need of cellaring. Score: 91+
Burghound, 10/09: [The Cobb Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak Vineyard 2007 has] good ripeness as well as a hint of menthol, yet the mostly red berry fruit and violet aromas are cool, pure and airy before sliding gracefully into fresh and energetic middle weight flavors that possess just a hair more overall depth and excellent length on the dusty and persistent finish. This is terrific and the balance is impeccable. Lovely juice. Score: 92
Winemaker’s notes: Creamy aroma reminiscent of a Chambolle-Musigny from Burgundy. Flavors of raspberry, earth, cherry, strawberry and red plum. Crisp, soft tannins and a lingering finish.
Harvest Notes
A bit further from the coast than our other vineyards, the early Spring weather generally permits a good fruit set of just over 2 tons per acre. This year was no exception and the fruit harvested after a long period of ripening was excellent .
