The Vineyard

The 2-acre Joy Road Vineyard is located just a short distance from our Coastlands Vineyard, north of San Francisco near Occidental. Although the soils are sandy loams typical of the ridge tops of this portion of western Sonoma County, the closely-spaced planting at this vineyard, combined with a unique mix of pinot noir varieties, yields a beautiful and unique addition to our portfolio of coastal Sonoma County pinot noirs. 242 cases made.

Tasting Notes

Steve Tanzer’s “International Wine Cellar” notes, 5/09: Vivid red. Vibrant red berry and blood orange aromas, with sexy floral and incense qualities gaining power in the glass. Nervy, high-pitched raspberry and cherry flavors stain the palate, with dusty minerals providing bite. The floral note resonates through a long, alluringly sweet finish and hangs on with great tenacity. Score: 93

Burghound, 10/09: This possesses the most restrained nose of the three [Cobb 2007 pinot noirs] with discreet red and blue berry fruit aromas (especially plum) nuanced by hints of clove and anise that can also be found on the fresh, intense and beautifully detailed flavors blessed with good mid-palate extract that buffers the moderately firm structural elements on the dusty and somewhat robust finish. This is a bigger wine than either of its two stable mates and will probably require one more year of cellar time. Again, certainly worth your attention. Score: 91

Winemaker’s notes: Aroma of herbs and spice. Flavors of raspberry, cherry, cola, earth, minerals and graphite. Crisp, tangy, delicate tannins and a nice long finish.

Harvest Notes

Spring weather here is similar to Coastlands, but lying a mile or so further inland appears to allow a more regular set in the Spring and a harvest of about 2 tons per acre in a normal year. This year was typical and with a nice, long period of ripening and flavor development, again without the development of excessive sugars.
