The Vineyard

Coastlands Vineyard is the original planting of Cobb Wines, and contains some of the oldest (20-year-old) pinot noir vines on the Sonoma Coast. This 15-acre vineyard has elevations ranging from 900 to 1,200 feet, and sits on a ridge that overlooks the Pacific Ocean four miles to the west. The varieties of pinot noir at Coastlands include Pommard, Martini, Wadenswil and Mt. Eden. The extreme, marine-influenced weather of Coastlands produces outstanding pinot noir fruit. Periods of spring rain or heavy fog can cause the vineyard’s yields to be very low, and in some years virtually nonexistent.  260 cases made.

Tasting Notes

Winemaker’s notes: Closed for the first hour, then aromas and flavors of red rose, black plum skin, Bing cherry, raspberry, white pepper, wet stone, and lemon cream. Tangy, juicy, with a full mouth-feel.

San Francisco Chronicle. Jon Bonné.  "Top 100 Wines: From small labels, big flavors come" 12/10: “The Top 100 lineup of Pinot is dominated by small, esteemed labels - names like…Cobb. This is the Top 100's largest category by far, and it is a big, impressive field of contenders. Ever more, the finest examples are coming from small, focused labels that work with tiny amounts of fruit.... Since 1989, the Cobb family has farmed this 14-acre parcel on the far Sonoma Coast planted almost entirely to heritage Pinot clones. Winemaker Ross Cobb stands by a tense, lower-alcohol style; it's a thinker's Pinot, ready for the cellar. A subtle loamy presence appears, with a satin texture amid huckleberry and bright raspberry. But there's far more below the surface - layered, earthy density that evolves and will grow for years. [The Cobb 2008 Coastlands Vineyards Pinot Noir] is an extraordinary expression of the coast.”

Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar. Josh Raynolds. "Bright ruby-red. Exotically perfumed bouquet of red and dark berries, medicinal herbs, flowers and Asian spices. Very pure and precise in the mouth, offering energetic raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a jolt of peppery spice. A touch of fresh bay comes up on the long, sappy, admirably focused finish. Has the structure and depth to reward patience." 92(+) Points.

Harvest Notes

The 2008 growing season for the 2008 wines at our vineyards was another near-perfect event. The early season was mild. The pesky spring drizzle and fog that can reduce a crop - or if severe, eliminate it entirely - was minimal for a change. The coastal locations of our vineyards helped us avoid the hottest weather that arrived just prior to harvest, and the wildfire smoke that threatened all of us on the coast in late summer never reached our vineyards. Three bullets dodged. Not bad for farming
