The Vineyard

Coastlands Vineyard is the original planting of Cobb Wines, and contains some of the oldest (20-year-old) pinot noir vines on the Sonoma Coast. This 15-acre vineyard has elevations ranging from 900 to 1,200 feet, and sits on a ridge that overlooks the Pacific Ocean four miles to the west. The varieties of pinot noir at Coastlands include Pommard, Martini, Wadenswil and Mt. Eden. The extreme, marine-influenced weather of Coastlands produces outstanding pinot noir fruit. Periods of spring rain or heavy fog can cause the vineyard’s yields to be very low, and in some years virtually nonexistent.  240 cases made.

Tasting Notes

Steve Tanzer’s “International Wine Cellar” notes, 5/09: Bright ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of black raspberry, violet and incense. Strong, mineral-inflected red and dark berry flavors are given spine by zesty acidity and pick up a bitter cherry pit quality with air. Gains sweetness and power in the glass, finishing with very good clarity and tangy persistence. Score: 92

Burghound, 10/09: A beautiful, cool and elegant nose that is ripe without ‘reaching,’ offering up notes of pure red pinot fruit trimmed in plum and violet nuances that lead to delicious, detailed, balanced and sappy medium-bodied flavors that display a trace of mint on the lingering finish. This is lovely with a real sense of harmony and the backend is sneaky long. Definitely worth a look. Score: 90

Winemaker’s notes: Aromas and flavors of white pepper, earth, raspberry, cherry, and minerals. Old vine sappiness. Rich, full tannins and a long finish.

Harvest Notes

The 2007 growing season produced a modest harvest of less than two tons per acre. This, combined with a long, mild ripening period resulted in one of the nicest wines ever to come from this vineyard.
